Bombay Times Group exists to give readers accurate, fair and useful news. These standards apply to everyone who reports, writes, edits or photographs for us.

Accuracy

We report what we can verify. Facts, figures, names and quotes are checked before publication. When a story develops, we update it and say so with an "Updated" timestamp.

Verification

  • We confirm information with primary sources — official documents, court orders, data releases, company filings and on-the-record interviews — wherever possible.
  • Claims circulating on social media are not reported as fact unless independently verified.
  • When we rely on reporting by another news organisation, wire service or official statement, we attribute it clearly and link to it in the story and in the "Sources & references" box.

Fairness and independence

We seek comment from people and organisations we report on, especially when a story makes allegations against them. Our journalists do not accept gifts, payments or favours in exchange for coverage. Commercial interests have no influence on editorial decisions.

Sponsored and partner content

Any paid, sponsored or partner content is clearly labelled as such and is kept separate from our journalism. Links in sponsored content carry rel="sponsored".

Bylines

Stories carry the name of the reporter or the desk responsible. Desk bylines (for example, "BTG Mumbai Bureau") are used for stories compiled by our editors from multiple sources, including verified reporting by other outlets, which is always credited.

Privacy and sensitivity

We do not name victims of sexual offences, minors in conflict with the law, or private individuals who are victims of fraud unless there is a compelling public interest and consent. We take care when reporting on suicide, following recognised guidelines, and include helpline information.

Use of images

We credit every photograph. Images used under free licences carry the photographer's name and licence. "Representational image" is stated where a photo illustrates a story but does not depict the specific event.

Use of AI

We may use software tools to assist with research, transcription or translation. All published journalism is reviewed and approved by a human editor, who is responsible for its accuracy.
