Mumbaikars heading to Zaveri Bazaar and neighbourhood jewellers on Dhanteras today, Friday, November 6, will find gold close to record territory in rupee terms, although well below the peak it hit earlier this year in international markets.
Gold and silver rates going into Dhanteras
On Thursday evening, 24-carat gold was quoted at about ₹1,46,600 per 10 grams in Mumbai's bullion market and silver (999) at about ₹1,92,600 per kg, according to All India Bullion. Rates published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA) put 24-carat gold at ₹1,44,129 per 10 grams — up about ₹3,000 from the previous day — and silver at ₹1,87,300 per kg.
That makes gold roughly 9% dearer than on Dhanteras 2025, when 24-carat gold was around ₹1,33,866 per 10 grams. Internationally, spot gold was trading at around $4,060–4,115 an ounce this week, well off its record of $5,594.82 an ounce on January 29, 2026.
Rates change through the day and differ between sources and cities. The prices above exclude GST and making charges; check your jeweller's live rate before buying.
Buying gold this Dhanteras: a quick checklist
- Insist on BIS hallmarking. Every hallmarked piece carries a six-digit HUID code. You can verify it on the government's BIS Care app.
- Know the purity. 22-carat (916) is standard for jewellery; 24-carat is used for coins and bars.
- Ask for the making charges separately. They can range widely by design and jeweller, and are often negotiable during the festive season.
- Factor in 3% GST on the value of gold, plus GST on making charges.
- Get an itemised bill showing weight, purity, rate per gram, making charges and HUID.
- Compare with digital options. Gold ETFs and gold mutual funds let you buy small amounts without making charges or storage worries.
Dhanteras marks the start of the five-day Diwali festival and is considered an auspicious day to buy gold, silver and utensils.
